with Eduard photo-etched detail set and Paragon resin flaps and slats
US Navy, VS-41 ‘Shamrocks’, USA 1975
Shortly after purchasing the AMT ES-3A Shadow I also obtained their S-3A Viking version of the same kit. As with the Shadow, the Viking is a very nice kit, but I redressed some of the model’s shortcomings by using the Eduard photo-etch set. This provides lots of details for the cockpit, much improving the kit’s flat instrument panels and decals — it’s just a shame that very little of it can be seen because the canopy is too darkly tinted. The etch set also provides loads of other details, such as grab handles, bomb bay details and completely new bomb bay doors with very detailed hinges (hence the number of underside photos below). I also added the Paragon resin slats and flaps, which fitted without trouble and make the finished model look a bit different. The kit itself goes together very well and I added some Mk.82 bombs in the bomb bay and Zuni rocket pods to the wings, both from the Hasegawa weapon sets. I used Halfords White Primer for the undersides and Humbrol enamel for the grey, followed by Klear and an oil wash. The kit decals were fine and sealed in using Matt Cote. I managed to get the wheels aligned correctly on this model, unlike on my ES-3A.
