Hasegawa 1/48 McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II

89th TFS, 906th TFG, 482nd TFW, US Air Force Reserve, USA 1983

The second F-4 Phantom II in my collection is this Hasegawa F-4D. This is one of Hasegawa’s older Phantom kits with raised panel lines. I built this kit straight from the box but added some seatbelts using Reheat buckles and tape. The finish is Gunze Sangyo acrylic with the exhausts in Humbrol Metalcote Polished Steel and Aluminium. Kit decals were used, which are typical Hasegawa: thick but good at settling into detail. I made my first attempt at using a matt clear coat on this model (Humbrol Matt Cote) and it was a disaster. One of the wings was coated and the matt finish immediately went a frosty white. Alarmed, I didn’t coat the rest of the model, hence it has a matt (and white!) wing but a glossy fuselage. I would later discover I simply hadn’t thinned the clear varnish enough. To see the same kit constructed a better standard, look at my F-4C Phantom II.
