Italeri 1/48 Lockheed SR-71A

Det. 1, 9th SRW, US Air Force, Japan 1968

Continuing the ‘big black birds from Lockheed’ theme is the Italeri SR-71A ‘Blackbird’. As you can probably tell I was a bit enamoured with the large, black planes at this time, and enthusiasm definitely prevailed over modelling skill on this one. The kit is quite rough around the edges, with some badly warped fuselage components and very poor overall fit. Still, this can’t hide the fact that this is one of my more primitive efforts. I put it together pretty quick, but manoeuvring it around the workbench was a challenge — it’s very long. Finish is black acrylic covered in Johnson’s Klear, a first for me at this time. This gave a pleasingly streaky finish to match various photos I’d seen, but didn’t stop the decals silvering (a recurrent problem with my models for a long time). I screwed up the walkway decals as well, so they’ve been left off. No aftermarket used; the model is straight from the box.
