Italeri 1/48 Panavia Tornado GR.1

With Xtraparts resin seats, exhausts, pylons, fin correction and wheels, Eduard photo-etched detail set and Xtradecals decals

Royal Air Force, Bahrain 1991

Continuing the RAF Gulf War theme for the first three aircraft of this collection is this Italeri Tornado GR.1. I used the extensive articles in Scale Models International by Peter Looper to make my Tornado as accurate as my skills allowed at the time. So I added lots of Xtraparts resin goodies: exhaust cans, fin correction, Hindenburger fuel tanks, BOZ and Sky Shadow pods, pylons, seats and wheels. An Eduard etch set (first go with this company) was used for the cockpit. All these aftermarket items were an excellent fit, but again, like the Jaguar, my modelling skills were not advanced enough to make the most of them. The finish is custom-mixed Citadel acrylics with an oil wash. I attempted some ‘realistic’ weathering using the Gulf AirWar Debrief book as a reference, but went way over the top. No matter — I was experimenting! The decals are Xtradecals which were fine. This kit is looking quite battered now and is missing a couple of aerials and one of the gun barrels. I spent a lot of money on this kit, and at the time I was pretty proud of it (not any more!). The Italeri base kit is rather nice; I have an ECR version in the stash and my more recently built F.3T can be seen here.
