Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire F.24

80 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Hong Kong 1951

Airfix released this Supermarine Spitfire F.24, along with a late-model Seafire, in the late 1990s, and much acclaimed they were. This is a very nice kit which went together with no problems at all. The only thing I could detect that was not quite right is that the canopy sits too high — it should have its lower lip down on the rails. This example is finished in Gunze Sangyo acrylics and Johnson’s Klear with an oil wash, and the kit decals were used. As you can see, the decals are quite translucent. The fuselage stripes should continue around the whole fuselage; I can’t recall why mine don’t! The rockets come with the kit, and overall it was a nice build. If I’d toned down the finish with a matt or satin finish I think it would look quite good. This kit was built straight from the box (apart from the seatbelts). I have built the same kit more recently in its F.22 guise (see here).
