VQ-6 ‘Black Ravens’, US Navy, USA 1994

AMT reissued the Esci S-3 Viking in this ES-3A Shadow ELINT version. It’s a great kit with very good fit and nicely scribed detail. The cockpit is very bare, but can hardly be seen through the darkly tinted canopy. I built this kit without aftermarket, but made a couple of modifications to make it more accurate following Ted Taylor’s article in Scale Models International. One of these was to reverse the new doors supplied for the electronics bay — the instructions would have you install them upside-down. The wheels ended up at a funny angle and I can’t remember why. They turned out okay on my S-3A… The finish is Gunze Sangyo acrylics with a Klear finish and an oil wash. The kit decals were used and were fine.
