Tamiya 1/48 Douglas F4D-1 Skyray

VF(AW)-3, US Navy, USA 1957

This is Tamiya’s F4D-1 Skyray, and whilst a very nice kit, the engineering and detail are not quite up there with their A-1H or F-84G. It does go together well, however, and I didn’t add any aftermarket to the model. I used Halfords White Primer for the undersides and Humbrol enamel for the other colours, including the dark blue spine and fin. I then coated with Klear and applied the kit decals. The markings are from the kit, and rather than use the large decals for the fin and spine, I painted all the blue trim and then cut out the yellow stars and applied them individually. An oil wash highlighted the surface detail and the shine was toned down using Matt Cote. The Sidewinders, rocket pods and navigation pod were all supplied with the kit. A nice model, but one I should have taken longer over to produce a more refined finish.
