Academy 1/48 Sukhoi Su-27UB ‘Flanker-C’

Soviet Air Force, Soviet Union

After reading Ken Duffey’s article in Scale Models International on the then-new Academy Su-27 ‘Flanker’, how could I not lust after one? Luckily I received the two-seater version one Christmas, and this is what it looks like. The kit is very nice, the only short-coming being warped leading-edge slats. Apparently the nose is poorly shaped, but I’ve never noticed. Photo-etch parts are included for cockpit mirrors, FOD grills and some undercarriage parts. The only modification I made to the kit was to detail the nosegear leg a little bit. The kit is not without its faults: the cockpit is woefully inadequate and undersized. I always intended to replace the kit seats with some resin items, but never got round to it, so it’s still ‘seatless’. The finish is Tamiya acrylics and is far from accurate. The kit decals were used and were nice and thin although a bit out of register. At the time of building this kit I was still experimenting with Klear, hence the glossy finish. For a look at a much nice Flanker, see my Su-27 ‘Flanker-B’. (This kit was painted whilst listening to England go out of Euro ’96 on penalties.)
