VF-193 ‘Ghostriders’, US Navy, USS Princeton 1951
Hasegawa’s F4U-4 is of an older vintage than their later Corsair models, of which I have four. This was the first model I consider to have successfully rescribed; the kit does have raised panel lines. I built this straight from the box and it went together with no problems. It’s a nice, simple kit with no vices. I used Humbrol enamels for the glossy sea blue finish and light blue trim, and then a coat of Johnson’s Klear. A brown oil wash was used and then the kit decals applied, followed by a coat of matt varnish. The exhaust was sprayed, and although it seems a bit OTT at first glance, a photo I have of this very machine shows the exhaust staining to be very extensive and quite a light shade of brown. At this stage in my modelling career my finishing was still quite patchy — note the canopy framing is still glossy whereas the rest of the airframe is matt/satin.

My late father, Commander, USN, James Woodrow Wyrick, flew the F4U-4 just after WW2.
He loved it, and said that “you just had to watch it.”
I suppose that he meant that the pilot had to be careful of the prop’s torque, which would tend to throw the craft off to starboard as it cruised.
