Airfix 1/48 de Havilland Sea Mosquito TR.33

with Paragon resin and photo-etch conversion set and Aeromaster decals

Royal Navy, 790 Naval Air Squadron, UK

I received Airfix’s Mosquito B.VI kit for my 19th birthday in 1997 before Tamiya released their version of this aircraft. I quickly afterwards purchased theParagon resin and photo-etch conversion to make the Sea Mosquito TR.33. The conversion set is typical Paragon: excellent casting, fit and detail. A new resin nose is provided along with spinners, a torpedo with photo-etch details, an addition to the instrument panel and tailhook. Photo-etch wingfolds are included and the set is completed by white metal propellers. I rescribed the few panel lines present on the Mosquito and added the conversion parts. I also replaced the gun barrels with brass tube, and the fin pitot with brass tube and wire, as well as making small corrections to the undercarriage. I didn’t bother folding the wings and just scribed the hinge line instead. To secure the torpedo properly I secured it to a ficticious strut attached to the fuselage. Markings were sourced from an Aeromaster sheet, and the decals were extremely nice. It’s a shame I didn’t pay proper attention to the instructions, as I’ve got the demarkation between the dark grey and the sky in the wrong place. If I’d used setting solutions the transfers would have looked even better. The finish is my standard Humbrol enamel — Klear — oil wash — Matt Cote sequence. Exhaust staining was an experiment using pastels.
